Mr. Murdo MacKenzie was head of the Matador Land and Cattle Company and a prominent figure in the American cattle industry. He often shipped train loads of cattle from Texas to the prairie of South Dakota for grazing. A grateful railroad company decided to name a town for him and thus Murdo was born. Over 40 businesses and serveral residences had been erected prior to the lot sale; as fast as lumber arrived. This is how the town got its nickname, The Magic City.
Over 100 years later, the sprawling prairie setting, friendly locals, and historical attractions keep the magic alive.
