our history

Sioux Falls Founded

The town of Sioux Falls was founded in 1856 prior to the Civil War. It was named for the Sioux Tribe that inhabited the area and the Big Sioux River. Since its establishment, the settlement has gone through periods of growth and even abandonment. Sioux Falls has been steadily growing for the last hundred years however and will not likely be abandoned again.

U.S. Air Force

In 1942, the U.S. War Department leased Sioux Falls land. The site was used to build the Air Force Technical Radio School which boosted the local economy and social life.

Shopping & Technology

Sioux Falls attracts nearly 14 million shoppers every year. It is the largest retail center between Denver and Minneapolis. But the city wants to be known for more than its hot bargains. Recent city initiatives have focused efforts into becoming a hub for research and technology as well.
