our history

Spearfish Founded

Spearfish was incorperated in 1888. The first settlers of the area were astonished by the beauty of the hills that surrounded them. They noted that the rocky bluffs and pine covered hills looked like a crown encircling the town. The nickname “Queen City” was given to Spearfish and is still used today.

Black Hills State University

Originally opened in 1883, the Dakota Territorial Normal School was formed as an institution for teacher training. Years later, the Territorial Normal School was renamed Black Hills Teachers College. The mission remained the same however and eventually 4-year and graduate degrees in teaching were offered at BHTC. It wasn’t until 1990 that a full array of programs were offered and Black Hills State University was formed. Today, students can pursue degrees in art & science, business & technology, and of course, teaching.

Wilderness Paradise

Today, people come to the “Queen City” for its incredible scenery and year round outdoor activities.
